On 7 December 2025, you will have the unique chance to experience one of Sweden’s most cherished traditions, Lucia.
The Lucia celebration is one of Sweden’s most beloved cultural traditions, deeply rooted in the contrast between winter darkness and the longing for light. During the long, cold, and dark Swedish winters, Lucia symbolizes hope, warmth, community, and the return of brighter days.
The Swedish Lucia figure draws on both the Christian martyr Lucia of Syracuse and older Nordic folklore, but is primarily seen today as a mythical bearer of light during the dark Swedish winters. The celebration always includes singing, and the Lucia choir, dressed in white, with Lucia wearing a crown of candles, performs traditional songs that have been passed down for generations.
